South Holston Gill Netting 2007

Sampling Date: December 13, 2007
Species collected in survey (7 net nights):

Walleye - 44

Walleye were sampled from South Holston Reservoir on December 13, 2007 for size structure and age and growth analysis. Forty-four walleye were collected in seven nets that were set from the dam upstream to Observation Knob Park.

Most (77%) of the walleye were over 18-inches. A good number were between 14 and 18-inches which should maintain the quality of the fishery by growing into harvestable-size within the next year. One walleye over 29-inches and 12-pounds! The condition (Wr) of only a few fish were slightly below normal while most fish were normal or above.

We continue to see a great walleye fishery in the reservoir. The population is very stable and made up of very high quality size fish. Since natural reproduction of walleye in South Holston is almost non-existent, the fishery that is in place is due to TWRA's stocking efforts.
